We had to say goodbye to one of the team today as after she decided to retire. It is always sad to see someone leave whether it is to go to another job or in the case to enjoy a long and happy retirement. The decision to give up work is one that we rarely consider or think about for most of our working life. Only when we are getting older does it start to feature in our thoughts.
Work can be such a huge part of our lives that leaving it behind is difficult to comprehend. But it is a huge opportunity for a fresh start and to move into a new chapter of your life. It depends on how you want to look at the situation. We have options in how we view things and just need to take them.
It is the same in many parts of our life. We can view changes as a positive opportunity, a chance to do something different, a way to develop and to try new things. Or we can see the same change as a loss, a move into the unknown and unfamiliar and a potential for things to get worse. It is all about a sense of perspective and how we want to look at it.
How many times have you said ‘this is getting worse’, ‘this isn’t going right’, or ‘I don’t want to do that’ when faced with change? Probably quite a few times. We all do it because we haven’t spent time to retrain our brains to take a more positive position. There are some people who naturally have a positive outlook but for the rest of us it is something that we have to work on.
I wish our retiring member of staff well in the new chapter of her life. We will miss her but there will be opportunities to change and develop. The situation could be positive experience for both our retiree and the rest of the staff. It is just a matter of perspective.
