Saddle up and learn

Learning and developing is essential for us all with whatever we are doing if we are going to improve. Today I spent three hours watching a dressage demonstration with the legend Carl Hester. Don’t worry this isn’t going to be a blog about horses but it is inspired by watching the session today.

The horses were fantastic but it was after seven or eight years of training. During the session the comment was made that you should always be learning and looking to improve. You need to be striving for perfection.

There is a lot of sense in that approach for people working in PR and communication roles. We should be assessing how well we are performing on a regular basis and then looking at how we can improve. We should be striving for excellence in everything that we do.

On a personal level we have to invest in our own development. We have to realise that we can always expand our knowledge and understanding of the work we do and find out new things. It means looking at what others do and how they approach things to see what we can learn. This is exactly what I did today learning about methods of training horses.

There are lots of opportunities for continuous professional development but we have to take control of our own learning path no one else can do it for us. In the current climate of pressure and cuts it can be difficult to remember that our own development is critical to the success of what we do. Perhaps we should all reflect on this and ensure we are investing in ourselves.
