Bring it into the open

There was a news item today saying that 300,000 people had lost their jobs due to mental illness. That is a really shocking figure. We live in such a stressful world that we have to find better ways of dealing with this problem.

I am lucky that while I have had issues to face I have never suffered mental illness. But I have watched it have a huge impact on individuals and their families and loved ones. It affects so many people that I still find it hard to understand why we avoid openly talking about it. There is still a stigma attached to it.

With the pressure and pace of modern life anyone could find themselves struggling so it is vital we all find ways to cope. We can’t make problems disappear but we can change the way we look at things. In doing that we are strengthening our future.

All this has to start from a young age so that people have a toolkit that they can use and take with the through life. We know young people are facing more challenges to their mental well being than at any time in the past. There is pressure to be popular, to look right, to have the perfect life, to have friends, and the list goes on.

We are now aware of the impact of mental illness on our lives the key has to be how we deal with it and find ways to support those who need help.
