The two young girls were so mature in the way that they dealt with such a scary situation. It was absolutely right that their bravery was recognised in some way and it was lovely to see them being presented with an award. But it is also a reminder of how important it is to educate children from a young age about using 999.
Children need to understand when to call 999 and what they may be asked so that they feel comfortable to use it in an emergency. You never know when that might be needed. But also it helps them to treat it with respect and avoid making prank calls or hoax calls. This is something that can be overlooked because so many other things take priority. It can also be difficult to get young people interested as they don’t see the benefit of knowing about making emergency calls.
Lily and Eva have shown the benefits and their story needs to be shared so that others can learn about the emergency services. I hope that my nephews and niece understand the importance of being able to get emergency help when it is needed. It is something I will be checking as soon as I can.
Being able to share real experiences to assist in communicating about key issues is crucial. Too often organisations either try to share information on a shoestring with no real hook for people, or they spend a fortune on artwork and whizzy graphics. I have often said that people have to be at the heart of communication. It is something all professional communicators must remember when they are faced with a problem they need to solve.
