Absolutely. That plan needs to allocate rolls, so it's someone's job to monitor social media, someone's job to be proactive on each channel (and control the accuracy of messages) but also someone's job not to panic, take the monitoring and feed it back to key people. Be the translator. In an actual crisis you'll be so glad you've got petiole on each bit, rather than a bunch of people trying to do everything.

I'll explore with those more ICT literate than me! Many thanks for your idea.

Illustration - to conduct a "live" physical + online meeting where participants (c20 to 50 in number) can see and hear each other (e.g. online participants displayed in rows of live video pics). Meetings generally have a Powerpoint presentation (could be distributed separately for perusal before the meeting if necessary) followed by discussion and agreement of key messages at the meeting. Duration c2 hours. Meeting would comprise participants both physically but also virtually present.

USE OF SOCIAL ON-LINE MEDIA
c80 volunteers (Independent Advisory Group) IAG in Hants and IoW use a password protected Yammer site online to share information and comment. We have varied skills, backgrounds, experience and knowledge that the Police use as "critical friend" (openness + confidentiality = very frank comment!) input. IAGs established post Stephen Lawrence Inquiry findings >> being closer to the community.
My suggestion is to further develop this idea nationwide for IAG members to have on-going wider discussions on key national topics. HMGov't , ACPO, Police College, PCCs and Regional Police Forces etc. would have access. Twitter often insufficient to enable full explanation of idea or fully comment on issues. Access would be much more "open" than our local Yammer site but major benefit would be to gather ideas and comment from the wider community - who know; innovation could accelerate dramatically pus efficiencies + cost savings!!

ALSO - protected sites like Yammer could extend "group discussion" as well as individual comment opportunities to many people with mobility difficulties, etc. who find it impractical to attend meetings. Additionally linking web-broadcasts Skype?) of conferences, external meetings etc. to homebound people would also enable their participation and interest!

What do you think please?

Hi Amanda, thanks for joining the chat last week and great post. I suspect that those that most worry about the blur between work and personal time are those that want to just turn up to work, do their work, go home and get paid.

For those of us who see their job as more than that, mobile gives us the ability to easily keep on top of and respond to emergencies. However, that doesn't have to mean that we work really long hours, just that our time may no longer fit to the standard 9 to 5. So yes, employers need to also be flexible.

Flexible working does though require discipline. You need to know how to turn off, and that can be quite a challenge for some people.
